SO, WHO ARE YOU?

My friends say I am a fairly decent coffee snob, early adopter of tech, finance graduate, and motorcycle enthusiast.

Why are you the best for me?

The best possible sound at the best possible price point.  You will be proud to show off these recordings to the world. Why should you hand over your blood, sweat and tears to be mixed by a stranger?  100% satisfaction guaranteed. If you don’t like it, send it back for a remix with exact notes of what to change.

Are you for real?

I never mix multiple projects the same exact way.  That would be like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.  I am always trying to make the next project sound a little better than yesterdays did.  One, up front, reasonable, flat rate, to get a project mixed to your liking and style.  Period.  That’s why.

Wow, that’s pretty cool.  So, will you work with my style of music?

I love working with all styles and genres of music, so I jump around quite a bit.  But recently I have enjoyed working with hip-hop, pop, ccm, folk, indie, and bluegrass styles.

What makes a good record?

A good song………………………… and a good ear.

Can you give me advice on how to make it sound better?

Sure!  Send me a message anytime and I will be glad to give your song a critique.

Can you both mix and master my song?

Short answer, no.  Long answer, yes.

I would recommend that for the best product possible in the long run you should have a separate mastering engineer finish the songs that I mix.  And likewise, if a project were mixed already, I would work on only mastering.

If your budget is limited and you don’t have the ability to hire a separate mastering engineer, let’s work together and figure out the best option for you.

I have a home studio, I can do it ALL myself.

Sure you can.  I can build a rocket by myself too.  Just give me 10+ years.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A GOOD MIX WITHOUT __________. DO YOU HAVE THAT?

If you believe that a great mix is due to said gear, then go to the people that have it.  Remember, gear doesn’t equal ear.  In other words, the most important assets a mix engineer has are his ears, not his gear.

I’M AN OLD-SCHOOL AUDIOPHILE WHO DOESN’T LIKE THe WHOLE IDEA OF MIXING “IN-THE-BOX”.  HOW CAN YOU GET A GREAT SOUND WITHOUT A WALL FULL OF ANALOG GEAR?

Do you still carry around a pager? Do you still use a rotary dial phone?  Do you still listen to a Walkman?  The point is technology evolves.  Get used to it.

NO, BUT SERIOUSLY…

Ok, a lot of tools have changed for the better over many years.  I am always looking to be on the cutting edge of audio.  The line between analog and digital worlds becomes increasingly blurred every year with better preamps, lower noise floors, better AD/DA conversion, better software/plugins, etc.  This doesn’t mean however that I won’t use analog gear when I feel like it.  I like to think I just mix.  Period.  Mixing is not so much in the box, or out of the box, but around the box.

I GOT THIS NEW PIECE OF SOFTWARE AND I CAN MIX ON MY LAPTOP IN MY LIVING ROOM!

Sure you can.  But then it’s going to sound like you mixed it on your laptop, in your living room.  The best tools to get the best sound cost tens of thousands of dollars that I have invested in FOR YOU.

I need this song mixed by tomorrow. Can you do it?

It all depends on how large the track count in a song is, detail of notes that are provided to me, quality of the original tracks, time of year, and alignment of the planets on the 7th day of the third equinox.

Seriously though, can you finish it by tomorrow?

How big is your wallet?

So the mix came back with some unexpected changes.  What’s up with that?

If a moment of inspiration strikes while I am mixing your song, I will do what I can to work within the feeling of the song and enhance it to be the best it can be.  The artist will always approve of any changes.  Don’t worry, if you hate it, everything can always be undone.

It sounds like we would be best friends.  Can I stop by your studio?

If you happen to be in the Northwest and you would like to attend a session, by all means!  Just bring some coffee beans and a good attitude.

Speaking of coffee, what type of coffee do you drink?

Coldbrew, straight, black.  Stumptown, Blue Bottle, Intelligentsia, Bluebeard, and other pretentious single origin varieties.  At the very least, use a French Press PLEASE.  Or Chemex.  Or Aero Press.
